Smoke testing of sewer lines is scheduled to begin July 29 and last throughout the summer. Contractors working for the City of Leavenworth will use a high capacity smoke blower to test each sewer pipe. Blowers  are placed on manholes and smoke is blown through the sewer system. Anywhere the smoke exits shows where there is a sewer leak.

The smoke that exits the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is nontoxic, harmless and has no odor. It does not create a fire hazard, and it is commonly used all over the country.

Contractors testing the sewers for most of the month of August between Halderman Street and Shawnee Street, from Central Street to South 18th Street. Crews will be more than happy to chat with you about the smoke and the testing if you have any questions.
