Sanitary Sewer Overflow Reported on August 1, 2023 at 601 3rd Street
At 5:10 p.m. August 1, Water Pollution Control (WPC) staff received a call of sewage coming out of a manhole. Staff responded on site and found sewage coming out of manhole no. 2365. Staff used their flush truck to try and remove the blockage, but were unsuccessful. Staff did a CCTV (video) inspection of City main and found it had collapsed. Staff bypassed pump sewage from manhole no. 2365 to downstream manhole no. 2005, stopping the overflow of sewage. Staff believe the collapse was caused by construction work being done to the road in this area. The contractor was called and made necessary repairs. Bypass of system ended at 8:00 p.m. WPC estimated 600 gallons of wastewater was released from the system. Creek has been determined to be within acceptable limits set by Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The affected areas were from the 601 3rd Street to the Missouri River.
