Trash Cart FAQs
1. Where do I place the trash cart if there's no space in the road, or there is a ditch, or the road is too narrow on trash day? Carts can be at the edge of the road, or at the end of your driveway.
2. What if someone wants more than one trash cart? The City of Leavenworth is making the initial purchase with the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, a federal stimulus funding program that is only available for a limited time to the City. Currently there is only one cart per residence. A 95-gallon cart should hold most weekly trash. The City strongly encourages recycling as it can cut the amount of trash disposed of in the cart and in the landfill by up to 50%.
3. What if I don’t want to use a trash cart? What if I'm renting and don't want to use one? Then don’t use one. The City will continue to pick up trash bags; however, we will no longer pick up loose items (see exceptions on website). Residents can use the trash cart and/or they can use trash bags. All items are to be contained within the cart or within closed trash bags.
4. How will the City pay for the trash cart program? The initial purchase of trash carts and the modifications needed to our existing trash trucks are being funded from ARPA.
5. Can I use an existing trash cart or a different style? No – the trash carts the City is purchasing are designed to be used with the equipment on our trash trucks. Existing carts or a different style may be damaged and therefore will not be picked up.
6. What if I change my mind and do not want a trash cart after the enrollment period has ended? If you do not opt out of the program, you will automatically receive a cart. As time permits, the City will remove the cart by calling (913) 682-0650.
7. Will users pay additional fees to support the trash cart program? There are no additional fees associated with the initial purchase of carts or the modification of the existing trash trucks.
8. I live on a crowded street with a lot of parallel parking. How will I fit my trash cart? Carts are to be kept near a garage or primary residence. On trash collection day, you would wheel the cart and place it at the edge of the street. This can be at, or immediately adjacent to, your driveway. Always place handles facing towards the street.
9. What if I need more than one trash cart? If you require additional trash to be picked up, the City will continue to pick up trash placed in bags – in addition to the carts. We do encourage everyone to recycle as much as possible as this can significantly reduce your volume of trash and lessen the demands placed on the landfill.
10. What if items get left in my trash cart? Trash carts will be tipped only once. Crews will not reach into the cart to remove what is left.
