Sanitary Sewer Overflow Reported on January 13, 2022 at 610 and 700 S. 10th Street
Posted January 13, 2022 at 1:22 p.m.
Around 6:24 p.m. January 10th, 2022, Water Pollution Control (WPC) staff was informed that a private lateral sewer line was leaking. WPC staff responded to the call and determined that a private lateral was leaking sewage, and had been damaged by boring in the area. This sanitary sewer overflow from the private lateral reached the storm drain on the corner of S. 10th Street and Chestnut Street. The boring contractor repaired the private lateral to end the bypass. Bypass of system ended at 7:00 p.m. City staff cleaned the area. WPC staff estimated 50 gallons of wastewater was released from the system. City staff will get E. coli samples from nearest outfall to creek to determine if it was affected. Until the determination is made, City staff will post creek contamination signs in the area of 701 Lawrence Avenue at the creek. The signs will be removed when it is determined the E. coli levels in the creek are within acceptable limits set by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The affected areas will be from the 700 block of S. 10th to the 700 block of Lawrence Avenue.
