Concrete Walkway

The Engineering Office is primarily responsible for the coordination of capital projects related to the development and reconstruction of the City's infrastructure. Other responsibilities for which the Engineering Office is responsible include the detailed review of subdivisions, lot splits, and commercial building site plans, coordination of underground conflicts with utility companies, and in-house design and inspection of capital projects related to the City's infrastructure. Public relations occupy a significant part of staff times. This includes providing specific public information related to drainage, sewer lines, flood plain, street lighting, and potholes.

The coordination of capital projects is an involved process that includes:

  1.  Selection of the design firm and negotiation of design fee
  2.  Review and approval of the design
  3.  Utility coordination
  4.  Preparation of construction bid documents, construction bidding process, and award of bid
  5.  Selection of inspection firm and negotiation of inspection fees
  6.  Construction inspection
  7.  Public relations
  8.  Final inspection

The Engineering Office is also the primary keeper of the technical records of the City. Much of this includes plans and specifications for construction projects. Other major record-related efforts include preparing various maps required by Public Works and other City activities.
