Sanitary Sewer Overflow Reported on September 22, 2022 at 151 Walnut Creek
Around 8:00 a.m September 22, 2022, Water Pollution Control staff noticed water leaking out under 36” sanitary pipe crossing storm runoff during routine creek crossing inspections.
City staff dyed sanitary main with green dye. Green dye was observed under 36” sanitary main. At this point staff acquired 36” plugs to seal off sanitary main and divert flow to another sanitary line running parallel with this line. This stopped bypass of sewage. City staff had hired a contractor to clean and CCTV 36” line to assess damage to line. It was also found that railroad material had fallen into storm runoff, causing flow to be diverted and undermine the City sanitary line. Union Pacific Railroad was notified and they made repairs to storm runoff channel and stabilized bank; so no further damage would be done to 36” sanitary main. City staff is currently establishing best repair for 36” main. Water Pollution Control estimated 60 gallons of wastewater was released from the system. The affected area is from the 151 Walnut Street to east to the river.
