On Friday July 23 at 10 a.m., the City of Leavenworth Wastewater Treatment Plant staff will conduct smoke testing of the sanitary sewer at manhole 1188 in the 800 block of Miami Street between 10th Street and Broadway and Miami and Shawnee streets.

Smoke testing is performed by blowing smoke into the sewer pipes. The purpose is to find areas in which smoke escapes into the system. Stormwater and storm drainage are currently leaking into the City’s sewer system, which can result in the City needlessly treating this stormwater at its sewer treatment plant.

The smoke is Petroleum Hydrocarbon, with the brand name Superior Sewer Smoke Fluid. It has been determined as not hazardous by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. More information about smoke fluid is here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FVWyVtcqD8IMC87Rk_xdWnRagD4Xb6QZ_RNHYHM5zEI/edit

The smoke should not enter buildings unless there is defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps.

For more information about the smoke testing or to report an immediate sewer concern, contact the Wastewater Treatment Plant staff at 913-682-1090.
