The City of Leavenworth is planning a major construction project along Fourth Street/Kansas Highway 7/US Highway 73 scheduled to begin as early as Monday, July 8. The roughly $3.1 million project will include construction along Leavenworth’s downtown thoroughfare from Choctaw to Seneca streets.

Work included in the project is a 2-inch milled removal of existing pavement replaced with two inches of asphalt and reconstruction of intersections in concrete. The project will have all new curbs and sidewalks, storm sewer and three new traffic signals that comply with accessibility guidelines.

Road Closures:

  • Sections of Fourth Street between Choctaw and Seneca streets will be closed starting the week of July 8 until fall.
  • Intersections at Shawnee Street, Delaware Street and Cherokee Street will be closed temporarily for up to 28 days throughout the process.
  • Intersections at Seneca Street and Choctaw Street will only close temporarily at the end of the project for resurfacing.
  • During the closure of the Delaware and Fourth Street intersection, traffic will change to a two-way street for one block in both directions.
  • When these intersections are not under construction, they will be open to east-west traffic.

The City of Leavenworth is working directly with the Leavenworth County Veterans Day Parade Committee to ensure that the 2024 Parade will be a success. Current construction schedules are highly variable as to whether there will be road closures by Nov. 11.

As part of the contract, residents and businesses downtown must have access to their buildings. Contractors are reaching out to businesses and residents in the area with more detailed information.

Post Office Parking

Parking at the Leavenworth Post office is available on-street parking along Shawnee or Seneca street or at the public parking lot, 307 Shawnee Street. The parking lot north of the Post Office is unavailable to the general public during construction.

KDOT Project
The Kansas Department of Transportation is also doing construction on this route, though further south in Leavenworth. Their news release is below.

A Kansas Department of Transportation pavement improvement project on northbound and southbound U.S. 73 (K-7, 4th Street) is beginning today, Monday, July 8, in Leavenworth County.

Project work will take place from U.S. 73/Limit Street, in Leavenworth, to U.S. 73/Sevenmile Creek, south of Ida Street, in Lansing, and includes asphalt milling and overlay, curb and gutter repair, pavement patching, bridge patching and pavement marking.

Message boards have been placed in the area to alert motorists of the project.

Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with some work during daytime hours, as needed. Detours will not be marked. While work is taking place, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction.

Traffic will be controlled using lane closures, temporary pavement markings, traffic cones and signs.

Ideker, Inc., of St. Joseph, Mo., is the contractor for the $2.2 million project, which is expected to be completed in mid-September. Project work is permitted to take place until early December.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone. To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas go to http://www.kandrive.gov/ or call 5-1-1. Drive safely and always wear your seat belt.
