City prepares for snow and ice season 2021-2022
Nov. 1, 2021 | Public Information Office
All snow and ice control operations are an emergency because of the public safety and economic effect on the Leavenworth community. The Snow and Ice Policy Manual explains more about our winter weather operations - https://www.leavenworthks.org/publicworks/page/snow-and-ice-policy-manual
The City of Leavenworth’s policy is to clear snow and ice in the following priority: emergency snow routes, public safety facilities, school loading zones on city right-of-way, Leavenworth Central Business District and residential streets.
Citizens can help prepare for weather safety by:
1) Know if you live near a Snow Emergency Route and make a plan to move your vehicle if it is parked along a route. This allows our crews to better clear safety hazards from roads and prevents your car from being towed. A map is available on the City of Leavenworth website.
2) Being familiar with statewide traveler safety information. Travelers can call "511" or check out these interactive, zoomable maps which tell current weather and construction conditions on state highways.
- KANDRIVE for Kansas Department of Transportation
- KC Scout or http://kcscout.net/ for the Kansas City metropolitan area
- Missouri Department of Transportation
3) If you’re working or driving on Fort Leavenworth, a garrison website has post road conditions and other pertinent information - https://home.army.mil/leavenworth/index.php/about/post-status
4) Individual school districts – Leavenworth USD 453, Fort Leavenworth USD 207, Xavier Catholic School and Saint Paul Lutheran – all make their own decisions regarding weather closures.
5) Visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency's site, www.ready.gov/winter-weather for other tips on preparing your home.
The City of Leavenworth will post information regarding weather emergencies on our website, Facebook page “City of Leavenworth, Kansas Government,” Channel 2 and Next Door.
