The City of Leavenworth is asking for public feedback about traffic safety in 2024 as part of a new project called First City Vision Zero. “Vision Zero” means a vision to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries among all road users.

This project uses input from the public to help guide the City in making streets safer for all – pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic.

“We want to hear from the public on ways we can create a safer First City,” said Brian Faust, Leavenworth Public Works Director.

The City has joined more than 45 U.S. communities that have adopted the Vision Zero approach and more that also are in the planning process. This method of improving traffic safety has been endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and is popular worldwide.

Faust said one of the reasons for the City’s launch of the new First City Vision Zero was also to compete at a higher level for grant funding. The First City Vision Zero Action Plan will lay out actionable, measurable strategies and emphasize design and policy solutions to enhance safety for all road users.

“Vison Zero is a data-driven approach, and yet it is the stories we are hearing from the community that gives us even greater insight and helps our team understand and address the traffic safety issues that community members experience,” Faust said.

The community can share their ideas on the City’s interactive website at https://leavenworthks.org/visionzero

The website features frequently asked questions, an optional Quick Poll survey, project contact information, an Engagement Map where visitors can add markers, and a place to share their comments. Members of the public may also upload photos to this website to show areas where they recommend enhancing safety while driving, bicycling and walking.

The site also includes a “Follow” function so users can receive updates about the project and upcoming events. Members of the public are invited to the First City Vision Zero pop-up event 5 to 7 p.m. February 22 at Leavenworth Public Library, 417 Spruce Street. During this meeting, community members can meet the project team, learn more about Vision Zero and share feedback. Check our website for future pop-up events in 2024.
